I had the opportunity to check out a downhill bike race near San Jose, Costa Rica as some friends mentioned they wanted to go. The organization of the event was a little bit different then what I am used to in Canada but on par with Tico time type events that I have seen before.
I saw a number of great competitors that definitely exceeded my expectations given there doesn’t seem to be a plethora of trails around San Jose and the mountains are really more hill then mountain, at least from a Canadian perspective. That being said, they really do get to practice all year round compared to our snowy season.
Almost everyone did the big drop near the end and we saw a few wipeouts along the way.
The other big difference was the crowd, a real vocal bunch carried coolers, drums, and vuvuzelas up the steep trail and managed to inch closer stretching the safety tape every chance they could.
Looks like I wasn’t the only one taking photos.
